A Sample Phone Interview to Help You Get the Job
Congratulations! You have applied for a position and have made it over the first hurdle. Someone at the company has reviewed your application or resume and has contacted you to schedule a phone interview. Now’s your chance to prepare for the interview by planning your answers to the typical questions you’re likely to be asked. Follow these tips to make the best impression possible:
- Take the interview seriously. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is just a “simple phone call.” It’s not. This is your chance to position yourself as the very best candidate for the job and get that face-to-face interview with the hiring party.
- Prepare. You applied for the position with either a resume or an application. Perhaps you saw a job description before you applied. Before your telephone interview, review the job description and your resume and determine which items you think made you a good candidate for the job as described. Also look at things on your resume that just might not fit. Both of these categories are likely targets for questions from your interviewer.
- Plan your key messages. Although you will be answering questions that you cannot predict in advance with absolute certainty, chances are the questions will focus primarily on your skills and qualifications for the job. Try to plan your answers using words that are focused on benefits to the hiring company. Make a list of the key points you want to make. Consider things like:
a. The positions I’ve had up until now have prepared me to do a good job in this position because ____________________.
b. I’m excited about working for your company because it is _________________.
c. I’m the best candidate for this job because ___________________.
- Prepare responses to common interview questions. Some common interview questions include:
a. Why do you want to leave your current job? Frame your answer around your key messages above and the reasons you want the new job. Don’t complain about your current position.
b. How much do you expect to make? This is a tricky question and you need to be careful with your answer. If your financial situation requires that you make a certain amount, be honest and state it. If you are more interested in the position than the salary, tell your interviewer. Keep in mind that you can always come down from a salary figure that is too high for the job, but conversely, if you give a number that is too low, it’s impossible to go up. Plan your answer accordingly.
c. When can you start? Even if you hate the job you’re in, it’s important to give your current employer at least two weeks notice. Saying “I can start immediately” when you already have a job tells the future employer that you might jump ship on them without notice as well. Two weeks is the standard time frame.
d. What would you say is your major weakness? This question often is one that throws people into a sputter. Some good answers to this question might be: “I tend to be a bit of a workaholic,” or “I’m somewhat of a perfectionist,” or “I don’t take enough time off.” For obvious reasons, these are good answers to this difficult question.
- Make a list of questions you have about the job or the company. It’s best if your questions focus on the work and not the money. In other words, don’t ask “How much does this position pay?” in the telephone interview. Some questions you might want to ask might include:
a. Is this a new position? If not, you might ask Why did the previous employee leave?
b. Is their growth potential with the company?
c. What can I provide in addition to what you have to ensure you have everything you need to know about me to consider me for this job?
d. Would you like a list of references who can attest to my work ethic?
The items listed here are sample phone interview preparation items, and by heeding this advice you should be less nervous, well prepared, and ready to put your best foot forward on the telephone to get to the next step in getting the job. Good luck!

Phone Interview Questions - You're applying for a job. They gave the following procedural list: 1. Submit your application. 2. If you are still in the running after they've weeded out unsuitable applications, they'll set up a telephone interview. This is less expensive than a personal interview for the company for reducing the number of applicants---a lower level (read that "cheaper") employee can do the interview, and it can be done in less time than a face-to-face interview. 3. If you're then still in the running, they'll set up a personal interview. You've submitted your application and resumé. What next?...
